Skywatch Friday: The last rose of summer...or not?

Since autumn's official arrival, we've had an amazing amount of wind here on the upper Bay of Fundy. Wind scouring in off the Bay can be hard on plants, tearing foliage off (especially when accompanied by heavy rain) and sometimes doing serious damage to plants and other structures.

This rose, however, photographed in one of the small communities a little further down the shore from Scotts Bay, is oblivious to the weather, still blooming in late October. I have roses still blooming too, but this one right on the shore deserved accolades. So it's my choice for Skywatch Friday.
Meanwhile, it's another windy day here, and the Bay is roiling and threatening accordingly. Hard to believe it's the same tranquil body of water that we go fishing on in warm weather. Those days, probably, are done for this year. And it looks like we're heading into a record breaking season of wind. Keeps the dust down, right?

  4. Lovely churning sea even if the fishing is over.
Nice SkyWatch, that last rose is a survivor indeed.
I have some early ones blooming but our spring winds have ripped whole branches off Mr.Lincoln and Papa Meilland. It is bad enough with possums eating the buds without attacks as well.

  5. The single rose, valiant in the wind..a beautiful photo with the awesome Bay of Fundy background. It's a wild day down on this side of N.S. today, and feels far colder than they predicted....a warm gloves and scarf kind of day and I expect your wind is pretty raw as well. It's not snow though..shouldn't we be happy)))).

  10. What a brave rose to hold her own on such a windy and nippy place. Here the roses are still flowering too but not as galore-some as they did in summer.

OT enjoyed your story about your fight with that very annoyinng stump!

  11. I would dread such winds here. We are now in a dust bowl. These photos are beautiful Jodi. Seeing the water breaking over those rocks makes me hear the surf crashing. Seeing that single rose makes me think of a young maiden awaiting her Sailor.

  12. If you're going to be somewhere windy, that looks like the best place to be!

  13. Yes, it keeps the dust down, because it sure isn't going to be rain for us! Unfortunately, no bodies of water to do it here either. :-(

Unbelievable wind here, of late. But you no doubt have it way more than we do. If we only had something to break it to the west. Nothing but wide open spaces here!

Beautiful rose, and BIG! I love that photo...

  14. Hi Jodi! It looks like your rose is thinking: Oh, how I enjoy these last warm days! Wonderful image. It also makes me think about a woman waiting for her friend who went to the sea. I think this is exactly what a good photograph should do - to evoke thoughts, to wake up one's imagination.

  16. Hi Jodi, You're so right. That little tough rose deserves generous accolades. So does the photographer. Gorgeous!

It seems that we've all had our share of weather anomalies this year. I once heard an old timer say wind is nature's pruning. Here's hoping your garden isn't in serious need. :)

It's definitely on my list to visit someday. Can't wait.
